Del Potro krijgt wildcard voor Sydney
Former Us Open champion Juan Martin del Potro will return to the ATP World Tour for the first time in more than three months after accepting a wild card to play next monthââ¬â¢s Medibank International Sydney.
Del Potro, who underwent right wrist surgery on 19 May, played just three tournaments in 2010. After losing in the fourth round of the Australian Open last January, the Argentine did not play again until late September, missing the opportunity to defend the Us Open title he won in 2009. He suffered first-round exits in Bangkok and Tokyo and has not played since.

Lupescu grijpt naast de Orange Bowl

Jannick Lupescu is er niet in geslaagd de finale van de Orange Bowl te winnen. De tennisser uit 's Gravendeel moest zijn meerdere erkennen in George Morgan.
De als negende geplaatste Engelsman won overtuigend met 6-2 en 6-3. De finale in Miami was het beste resultaat van Lupescu van dit seizoen. De 17-jarige tennisser is de nummer 24 van de wereld bij de junioren, Morgan de nummer veertien.
De Orange Bowl wordt gezien als een van de belangrijkste jeugdtoernooien van het jaar. Oud-winnaars van het toernooi in Miami, zijn onder andere huidige toppers Roger Federer en Juan Martin Del Potro.
Lupescu speelt later deze week op de Tennis Masters in het Rotterdamse Topsportcentrum. Hij moet het daar in de eerste ronde opnemen tegen Arko Zoutendijk.

PARIJS - Rafael Nadal en Caroline Wozniacki zijn uitgeroepen tot wereldkampioenen 2010 van de internationale tennisfederatie ITF. De Spanjaard Nadal ontvangt voor de tweede keer in zijn carrière de ereprijs, voor de Deense Wozniacki is het de eerste keer.
Nadal is de zevende tennisser in de historie die een grand slam heeft binnengehaald. Met zijn zege in de US Open in september completeerde hij het kwartet. Wimbledon, Roland Garros en de Australian Open had hij al op zijn naam staan.
Nadal beëindigde het tennisjaar ook als de nummer 1 van de wereldranglijst. ''Het is een eer'', zei Nadal in een reactie. ''Na een moeilijk jaar in 2009 is het een heerlijk gevoel om weer de nummer 1 van de wereld te zijn.''
Wozniacki
Wozniacki won dit jaar geen grandslamtoernooi, maar was volgens de ITF met zes toernooizeges wel de meest constante tennisster. Ze eindigde dit jaar bovenaan op de wereldranglijst.
''Ik ben enorm trots dat mijn naam nu tussen de grote kampioenen staat. Het was een geweldig jaar en ik wil volgend jaar jaar nog beter.''
De ITF riep de Amerikaanse tweeling Mike en Bob Bryan voor de zevende keer uit tot de wereldkampioenen in het dubbelspel. Die titel viel bij de vrouwen voor de eerste keer ten deel aan de Argentijnse Gisela Dulko en de Italiaanse Flavia Pennetta.
Vergeer
De Nederlandse Esther Vergeer viel ook in de prijzen als beste rolstoeltennisster van het afgelopen jaar. De ITF-awards worden pas op 31 mei 2011 tijdens het jaarlijkse galadiner in Parijs uitgereikt.

Esther Vergeer zal binnenkort een nieuw record op haar naam schrijven. Ze is dan 43 jaar op rij verkozen tot beste rolstoeltennisster.

The continuing saga of controversial Aussie teenager Bernard Tomic continued as the Herald Sun is questioning whether the 18-year-old was legitimately ill when he pulled out of the Australian Open wildcard playoffs.
Tomic notified officials of his withdrawal on Sunday night, but the Herald Sun reported that he practiced for two hours in Queensland on Tuesday, the day the competition began. The newspaper said that Tomic is confident that he will be handed one of Tennis Australia's discretionary wildcards for the Australian Open and didnââ¬â¢t feel he needed to compete in the playoffs.ââ¬Â¨
"If what you're saying is correct, one, I'd be highly annoyed and, two, I'd have to talk to the team on what decision we would be taking," Australian Open director Craig Tiley said. ââ¬ÅHe'd be considered (for a wildcard), he's been considered all year... but if someone makes a decision to rely on the discretionary wildcard, I never advise someone to do that. This is why we have this event, because you can confirm your opportunity, you know you've got it and you can just prepare for your summerââ¬Â¦I know for a fact that each year it's getting harder because there are more players, younger players, who are very good. So it's going to start going to players who are doing the right thing."ââ¬Â¨
Aussie veteran Peter Luczak, who will face James Lemke in quarterfinals of the playoff, said he would compete regardless of his health.
"You couldn't have stopped me from playing this," Luczak said. "Twisted ankle or broken leg, I would have been out here trying."
In the women's draw, Alicia Molik and Jelena Dokic both scored wins. Dokic bested Nina Catovic 6-3, 6-2, while Molik edged Sophie Letcher 6-4, 7-6 (4).ââ¬âMatthew Cronin

Daarom, en juist die houding lijkt mij het grootste probleem momenteel bij hem. Andere optie is een WC voor het q-toernooi.

Gisteren naar de RTV Rijnmond Sportgala geweest. Lupescu was genomineerd als talent maar is het niet geworden. Heb heel kort even met hem gesproken. Aardig kereltje die volgens mij wel uit het juiste hout is gesneden. Overigens werd Excelsior sportploeg van het jaar voor Neptunus en Rotterdam Atletiek =D>
Andere winnaars waren van Bronckhorst (man), Yvonne van Vlerken (vrouw, triathlon), Marjolijn van Unen (coach, judo) en Britt Eerland (talent, tafeltennis) en Koos Moerenhout (award voor carriere)

American Wayne Odesnik has doping ban suspended
Odesnik never tested positive for HGH despite taking eight vials into Australia
American Wayne Odesnik has had a two-year doping ban suspended after 12 months, allowing him to return to action from 29 December.
Odesnik admitted in March to taking human growth hormone into Australia.
An International Tennis Federation (ITF) ban - backdated to 29 December - followed but that has now been halved.
The ITF decision followed "substantial assistance provided by Mr Odesnik in relation to the enforcement of professional rules of conduct".
Odesnik, a former world number 77, was ranked 111 in the world when his original ban was set in April but has now slipped off the ATP rankings altogether.
He was stopped by customs officers on 2 January when he arrived in Australia ahead of the Brisbane International tournament and was subsequently fined Aus$8,000 (ã4,850).
Eight vials, each containing six milligrams of the performance-enhancing substance, were found in his baggage, although he never tested positive for HGH.

World No. 1 Rafael Nadal won the BBC Overseas Sports Personality of the Year award in Birmingham, England, on Sunday night.
"For me it's an honour, thank you very much to the BBC for giving me this award," 24-year-old Nadal told BBC television in a pre-recorded video message. "It's just a dream being in the list of great champions to receive this award."
In 2010, the Spaniard won three Grand Slam championship titles at Roland Garros, Wimbledon and the US Open to become only the seventh man in tennis history to complete the set of all four majors. He also lifted three ATP World Tour Masters 1000 trophies in Monte-Carlo, Rome and Madrid.
His rival, Federer, praised Nadal, saying: "I think what Rafa has done at such a young age, so consistently, is quite phenomenal really and he's the best player by far in 2010."
Novak Djokovic, who was beaten by Nadal in the US Open final in September, added: "What's amazing about him is his mental ability to play continuously, each year better and better. He's actually improving. He's a real example of a tennis champion."
Other tennis stars to have won the BBC Overseas Sports Personality of the Year award include Rod Laver (1969), Arthur Ashe (1975), Bjorn Borg (1979), Jimmy Connors (1982), Boris Becker (1985), Andre Agassi (1992), Goran Ivanisevic (2001) and Federer (2004, 2006-07).
On 15 December, the Spanish tennis journalists association, the 'Asociación de Periodistas de Tenis (APT)', presented Nadal with their top award at a gala ceremony in the Heredad Segura Viudas.
Nicolas Almagro was awarded the most improved player award for two ATP World Tour titles this year and a year-end South African Airways 2010 ATP Ranking of No. 15.

Pete Sampras tennis trophies stolen from storage depot
Pete Sampras was ranked number one in the world from 1993 to 1998 Former world number one men's tennis player Pete Sampras has had most of his tournament trophies stolen.
The American said the trophies were taken from a warehouse in Los Angeles, where they were being kept in storage.
"Losing this stuff is like having the history of my tennis life taken away," the retired star told the Los Angeles Times newspaper.
Mr Sampras said he wanted his children to see the trophies and appealed for help in getting them back.

"I'm not one to gloat about trophies, or show them off. I've never been like that. They didn't see me play, but I would like them to see these things," he said.
He said he was making the theft public in the hope that it would lead to the return of the items.
"I know this is a long shot, but I would regret it if I didn't at least try. Maybe somebody knows something. That's all I can hope for," Mr Sampras said.
Memorabilia taken
He said he had put the trophies in storage after moving home twice, but that none of the items was insured because there was no way of placing a monetary value on them.
"I thought there were security cameras. I thought these things were locked up tight," Mr Sampras said. "I was shocked."
The paper said the thieves had made off with most of his trophies from his 64 tour wins, two Davis Cups victories, an Olympic ring and six trophies for his world number one rankings from 1993 to 1998.
Magazine articles and newspaper clippings were also taken, along with memorabilia autographed by the musicians Elton John and Carlos Santana.
However, Mr Sampras said that only one of the 14 Grand Slam trophies he had won had been stolen - the first one he won at the Australian Open in 1994.
The 39-year-old retired in 2003 and has two children with his wife, the actress Bridgette Wilson.

Volgens mij heeft hij het qualie toernooi voor de WC gewonnen. Las ergens dat ie ondanks blessure toch zijn 1e ronde won. En idd opzouten met dat over het paard getilde talentje

En Tomic is pas net 18. Hij heeft nog jaren de tijd om zich te ontwikkelen en is dan nog steeds jong. Ik heb er, al 2 jaar
