Argentine Guillermo Canas (pictured) and Swede Joachim Johansson will both miss next month's Australian Open in Melbourne. Canas, who made the biggest jump of any player into the year-end 2007 Top 20, is suffering from left wrist tendinitis. Johansson is concerned about a lack of match practice resulting from a six-week illness.
Canas, 30, will not have surgery but will wear a cast for at least two months, raising doubts about his fitness for the first week of the Latin America swing, which begins January 28 in Vina del Mar.
In 2000 Canas missed three months with a left-wrist injury and he also suffered right-wrist injuries in 2002 and 2003.
In 2007 Canas climbed from No. 143 to No. 15 in the year-end South African Airways ATP Rankings. He defeated Roger Federer in back-to-back tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami, where he reached the final. The 30-year-old Buenos Aires native won his seventh career ATP title in Costa do Sauipe and was runner-up in Miami and Barcelona.
Johansson, who reached a career-high ranking of No. 9 in 2005, played just three events in 2007 due to a right shoulder injury. After January he played just one Davis Cup match and one tournament, withdrawing from the second round of Stockholm due to illness.
